PROGRAMS
Productions
Stage and screen productions are at the heart of The Griot Project’s mission to preserve, amplify, and honor Black stories. Inspired by the West African griot tradition, our theatre and film work creates spaces where lived experiences are shared with dignity, fostering connection, healing, and reflection. Live stage productions cultivate communal dialogue and intergenerational understanding, while film ensures these stories reach broader audiences and endure over time.
Together, these mediums restore narrative agency and affirm the value of Black life, using storytelling as a tool for cultural preservation, creative expression, and community transformation. Through stage and screen, The Griot Project carries forward the sacred work of the griot—ensuring our stories are seen, heard, and remembered.
Workshops
Integrating artistic expression with trauma-informed care, theatre arts workshops become tools for healing, empowerment, and renewal. They help individuals reclaim their voice, support communities in processing shared pain, and inspire hope by illuminating the enduring strength and creativity within every story.
Through guided storytelling, improvisation, and embodied expression, participants are invited to externalize experiences that may otherwise remain unspoken. This creative process fosters self-awareness, reduces isolation, and affirms that one’s story has value. Trauma-informed facilitation ensures that participants maintain agency, are not retraumatized, and are supported with care and respect throughout the process.
Our workshops foster connection, reduce isolation, and affirm the value of every voice. By transforming every story into a communal experience, theatre becomes a tool for healing, resilience, and renewal—helping individuals reclaim their voice and inspiring communities to move forward with strength and hope.
Retreats
Grounded in faith traditions and cultural awareness, our retreats recognize the unique burdens carried by individuals and communities navigating racialized trauma, systemic inequities, and generational stress. By centering spiritual care alongside emotional and creative expression, retreats become spaces of restoration rather than escape.
Through practices such as guided reflection, storytelling, visual arts, music, and embodied worship, participants are invited to reconnect with their voice, their faith, and their inherent worth. Trauma-informed facilitation ensures emotional safety, personal agency, and compassionate support, allowing participants to engage their stories without fear of retraumatization. Artistic expression provides pathways to process grief, reclaim identity, and envision new possibilities for their lives and communities.
Our retreats also cultivate communal healing by fostering connection among individuals who share cultural and spiritual understanding. Participants are reminded that they are not alone, and that healing is both a personal and collective journey. Integrating faith, cultural context, trauma-informed care, and the arts, our retreats nurture resilience, restore hope, and empower people of color to return to their communities renewed—rooted in faith, strengthened in identity, and equipped to live with greater wholeness and purpose.
““Many stories matter. Stories have been used to dispossess and to malign. But stories can also be used to empower, and to humanize. Stories can break the dignity of a people. But stories can also repair that broken dignity.” ”
